With this exhibition at the Triana Ceramics Centre, the presence of this popular Sevillian handicraft will be revealed in the context of Murillo’s pictorial work.
There is plenty of evidence of the presence of ceramic objects in paintings throughout the different periods of the History of Art but, undoubtedly, it is during the Baroque period, with its taste for ‘still life’, when their presence on canvases was made more remarkable and reached higher quality.
Murillo, like many other painters of his time, reflected in his paintings the world around him (rogues, elders, women and men doing their daily chores, as well as the settings where they did them), portraying a true catalogue of props where there appeared, of course, ceramics from Triana (pitchers, jugs, pots, jars, alcarrazas (earthenware containers for cooling water), plates, dishes, bowls …).
