This exhibition aims to answer the question of how Murillo and his work would perform nowadays through two lines of research. The first will explore Murillo’s invention, his fictionalized biographical avatars and the popular memorabilia unleashed by his fame while the artist lost his academic and avant-garde prestige; the second will raise a critical recovery from values ​​- charity, community, affections – that modernity had censured him. The exhibition includes pieces that allow us to view the iconographic permanence of the master in popular culture, paintings, engravings and advertising prints and modern and contemporary art works that rely on methods and ways of doing that Murillo applied in his time. In this fashion, not only will common places around the painter and his expiration as a reference be refuted, but also a new look will be cast on today’s art works from Murillo’s perspective.
